Including passage though three tunnels, The Paw Paw Tunnel on the C& O Canal,  The short Borden Tunnel on the Allegheny highlands in Maryland and the first official passage through the newly renovated Savage Mountain Tunnel

Support Service will be provided by Wilderness Voyageurs, Ohiopyle, PA, and will include:

  • Transportation of bicycles from Ohiopyle, PA to Washington, DC
  • Transportation of baggage between nightly stops
  • Transportation between trail heads and lodging, and between lodging and local restaurants
  • Transportation from Cumberland, MD to Meyersdale, PA (incomplete section of trail)
  • Mobile repair shop where trail can be reached by the shuttle
  • Fresh water, ice, and beverages at lunch time and end of daily rides
  • Spare bicycles

Fee for the above support services: $18.75 per person per day (June 8-15) or $150 per person for the entire 8-day ride. There is no fee for persons who join the ride but do not partake of the above services. Nonetheless, registration is encouraged. Additional details and biking directions will be provided prior to the ride.

Participants will be responsible for:

  • Transportation to Washington, DC
  • Transporting bicycles to Wilderness Voyageurs, Inc., Ohiopyle, PA, between June 2 and June 7, 2003, for transport to Washington, DC
  • Meals
  • Lodging
    • When making your reservations be sure to mention the Allegheny Trail Alliance (ATA) to receive the listed rates.

    • All lodgings are within a short biking distance from the trail with the exception of the Town Hill Hotel B&B in Little Orleans, MD. Use of the shuttle service is recommended for travel to and from the Town Hill Hotel B&B.

Please note: The fee is based on sharing expenses for the support services and for organizing the ride (supplies, postage, telephone, mileage, etc.) equally among all participants proportional to the number of days each participant plans to ride. For planning purposes, the daily fee was conservatively established based on an estimated 20 riders. The final cost will be equitably adjusted if more than 20 persons participate. There are mountains between Cumberland to Meyersdale

You can do one of the following

  1. Take the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSRR) to Frostburg and then ride the trail from Frostburg through the refurbished Savage Mountain Tunnel To Confluence (47 miles about 17 on either unfinished trail or low traffic roads)

  2. Take the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSRR) to Frostburg and then shuttle from Frostburg to PA line (40 miles about 10 on either unfinished trail or low traffic roads)

  3. Take the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSRR) to Frostburg and then shuttle from Frostburg to Confluence (zero miles)

  4. Shuttle from Cumberland to PA state line and then bike to Confluence (40 miles about 10 on either unfinished trail or low traffic roads)

  5. Shuttle from Cumberland to Meyersdale and then bike to Confluence (30 miles)

Note: For options 1,2 and 3 train fare not included, make your own train reservation
